Toyota range scoops top gong
Judges of an annual awards were so impressed with the different variants of the Toyota Yaris that they have handed the top gong to the whole range.
The Yaris range was announced the overall winner in the race to be named New Zealand Autocar Car of the Year 2020 after versions of the model took out three of the other eight categories.
The Toyota Yaris won the under $30k section, the Yaris Cross claimed top spot in the $30k-$45k category, and the GR Yaris scooped the performance title.
NZ Autocar announced the winners in the latest edition of its magazine, which was published on February 24.
Cars were judged on five main criteria that covered design, performance, driving dynamics, practicality and value.
“With a Yaris taking out three of our class wins, it was too hard to pick an overall winner, so we’re naming the Yaris range our Car of the Year,” says the magazine. “Weird? Well, that’s 2020 for you.”
Other victors include the Ford Escape in the $45k-$60k class, Kia’s Sorento in the $60k-$100k category, while the GMW Cannon has been named top ute.
