Petrol and diesel prices increased between August and September, according to figures released by Stats NZ.

The cost of petrol increased by 6.4 per cent month-on-month, while diesel rose by 7.8 per cent over the same period.

Nicola Growden, prices and deflators spokesperson, says: “Supply disruptions that began in late February 2026 contributed to higher fuel prices in March and April.

“Petrol and diesel prices then declined through to July, before increasing again in August and September.

“Although prices in September were above March levels, they were still below the peak recorded in April.”

In the year ended September 2026, prices for these two fuel types increased, with petrol climbing by 24.3 per cent and diesel recording a 55.8 per cent jump.
