New Cooper offers extra space

A few months after the launch of the new Mini Cooper 3 Door, the five-door Cooper will join the marque’s line-up in New Zealand in the final quarter of this year.

Measuring 4,036mm in length, 1,744mm wide and 1,464mm high, the body dimensions are almost identical to those of its predecessor and come as Mini pursues its mantra of trying to create as much space as possible on a small footprint.

The three-cylinder petrol engine of the Cooper 5C generates 115 kW/156hp, has a combined consumption of 6.6-6.0l/100km, and produces 136-148g of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per kilometre and 230Nm of torque. It can also complete the 0-100kph sprint in eight seconds and reach a top speed of 225kph.

As for the 5S model, this has a four-cylinder petrol engine with 150kW/204hp, consumes 6.8-6.3 l/100km, produces 141-153gCO2/km, has a maximum torque of 300Nm and can go from 0-100kph in 6.8 seconds and has a top speed of 242kph.

The wider rear interior provides comfortable space for three passengers and the folding rear seats increase the luggage compartment capacity from 275 litres to 925 litres.

Compared with the outgoing model, the central OLED display in the redesigned cockpit has been moved closer to the driver to make it easier to reach and all vehicle functions can be controlled intuitively by touch or voice.

Other design changes have resulted in the parking brake, gear selector, start/stop button, experience mode and volume control all being at the driver’s fingertips.

The removal of the gear selector has freed up more space in the centre console, which now features a large open storage compartment in addition to the cup holders. Smartphones are held securely and can be charged in the wireless charging area at the front of the console.

Pricing starts from $48,990.
