Dealer numbers tail off
Brief run of increases for traders register ends but December still produced the third-highest figures of 2023.

The number of dealers on the Motor Vehicle Traders Register (MVTR) fell by 12 last month, with the total at the end of December standing at 2,910.
The figure was the third highest of the year – only beaten by 2,922 in November and 2,912 in January – and the dip came after increases in the preceding two months.
It also meant the latest total is 30 lower than the 2,940 registered traders at the end of December 2022.
Dealer numbers have largely been in decline since hitting a high of 3,536 in November 2017.
The MVTR holds essential information about registered traders and their businesses. It is operated by Trading Standards, which falls under the remit of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.
