BMW NZ to boost EV line-up

The third-generation BMW X1 is set to hit the New Zealand market in the fourth quarter of this year and will be followed by the model’s first fully electric variant, the iX1, early in 2023.

The new X1 has a revamped exterior styling package, a redesigned interior, more internal space and a broader array of driver-assistance systems.

At launch, BMW New Zealand will offer the X1 sDrive18i that is powered by a 1.5-litre TwinPower Turbo engine with seven-speed Steptronic transmission and double clutch as standard.

The addition of the iX1 xDrive30, pictured, in the first quarter of next year will expand BMW Group NZ’s electrified model portfolio to 12 models.

Two integrated drive units at the front and rear axles deliver a combined output of 230kW and post an overall torque figure of 494Nm, and the car has a range of 413-438km when fully charged.

The new X1 features slim LED headlights with matrix high beam, a large, almost square BMW kidney grille, and pulsating turn indicators.

Buyers can select from a range of alloy wheels in 18, 19 and 20-inch sizes – the latter a first for the BMW X1 – and choose from an array of exterior colours.

A sport leather steering wheel, intelligent two-zone automatic climate control and a rain sensor with automatic headlight activation all come as standard, as do four USB-C ports and two 12V power sockets.

Optional features include ambient lighting, a panoramic glass sunroof and a Harman Kardon sound system.

Boot space has grown from 505 litres, with second-row seats upright, in the previous model to 540 litres in the new X1, and from 1,550 litres to 1,600 litres with the second row folded down.

Technological advances of the incoming model include cruise control with brake function, plus a front-collision warning system and parking assistant including reversing assist camera and reversing assistant.

Other available assistance systems include steering and lane control assistant, active cruise control with stop-and-go function, active navigation, and exit warning function.

Further details on specifications and pricing will be announced later this year.
