World hat-trick for Hyundai

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 has been voted 2023 World Car of the Year. It has also taken out the electric vehicle (EV) and car design awards.

It’s the second consecutive triple win for the South Korean company in the World Car Awards because its Ioniq 5 was last year’s winner in the same three categories.

“We’re thrilled to receive this prestigious honour two years in a row, which recognises the talents and efforts of everyone at Hyundai to bring EVs like the Ioniq 6 to market,” says Jaehoon Chang, president and chief executive officer.

The BMW X1 / iX1 and Kia Niro completed 2023’s top three in the world. To be eligible for the top award, cars had to be produced in volumes of at least 10,000 units a year, priced below the luxury-car level in their primary markets, and must be on sale in at least two major markets – out of China, Europe, India, Japan, South Korea, Latin America and the US – and on at least two separate continents at some time between January 1, 2022 and March 30, 2023.

The world luxury car award went to the Lucid Air, the Citroen C3 was urban car of the year and Kia’s EV6 GT landed the gong in the performance category.
