Triton sees off rivals
Mitsubishi dominated New Zealand’s market for new commercials in January* by having the top model and being the best-selling marque.
Its Triton, pictured, sold 1,118 units for a 24.6 per cent share of the market. That was a 170.7 per cent increase from 413 units in the same month of last year.
Mitsubishi also came top of the marques ladder with 1,137 registrations for a year-on-year jump of 162.6 per cent from 433 sales in January 2021. That represented a 25 per cent of the new commercial-vehicle market.
In total, there were 4,544 new commercials registered in January for an 8.9 per cent increase from 4,171 in the same month of last year.
Ford’s Ranger came second on the models’ table. It sold 953 units – up by 0.5 per cent from 948 for a 21 per cent share of the market.
The Toyota Hilux was third with 11.1 per cent. It sold 506 units, which was down by 32.4 per cent from 748.
Nissan’s Navara was fourth with 384 – up from 280 or by 37.1 per cent. Its market share was 8.5 per cent. Isuzu’s D-Max was fifth with 172, which was a drop of 29.5 per cent from 244 for a 3.8 per cent share.
New Zealand’s top three vans in January were Toyota’s Hiace with 146 – down by 15.6 per cent. LDV’s G10 was second, up by 85.7 per cent, with Fiat’s Ducato third on 64 on the back of a 12.3 per cent decline.
Ford was the second-placed light-commercial marque in January with 976 sales for a market share of 21.5 per cent. This was down by 4.4 per cent from 1,021 in the same month of last year.
Toyota was third on 668, down by 29.2 per cent from 944 for a 14.7 per cent share of the market.
Next up was Nissan with a market share of 8.5 per cent thanks to 384 sales, which was up from 280 and by 37.1 per cent. LDV rounded off the top five on 251 on the back of a 73.1 per cent from 145 to claim 5.5 per cent of the market.
January was a huge month for Mitsubishi with it securing the double of top marque and model when it came to sales of new passenger vehicles.
