Ford’s F-150 has been dethroned in the US with the Toyota RAV4 becoming America’s best-selling vehicle.
The changing of the guard is significant given the blue oval has held the top spot for so long.
The RAV4’s success appears mainly due to the increased popularity of its hybrid powertrain, ending the F-150’s four decades at the top except for 2009 when Toyota’s Camry overtook the ute as the effects of 2008’s global financial crisis were still being felt.
Jato Dynamics reports that F-150 sales dropped by five per cent to 460,915 during 2024 in the US, while the RAV4 jumped by nine per cent to 475,193 units.
Felipe Munoz, global analyst, points out that while Jato’s list only looks at individual models, other figures may paint a different picture.
If they do, it will be because they will include the entire F-series family, which includes the F-150, F-250, and F-350. Its list only looks at single models.
Jato’s list of top sellers reveals sales of the Honda CR-V increased by 11 per cent to 402,791 to come third.
The Camry and Corolla, up by seven and 22 per cent respectively, and Chevrolet’s Silverado falling by two per cent, provided Toyota even more cause for celebration as it secured three models in the top 10.
