Toyota beefs up Fortuner SUV

Toyota has added some extra grunt to its Fortuner with a 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine for the 2021 model delivering more power than its predecessor.

At the same time, the carmaker claims engineers have been able to improve fuel efficiency in the SUV.

The turbo-diesel’s power has been increased by 20kW to 150kW while peak torque has been increased to 500Nm through modifications to the cylinder block, pistons, turbo design and cooling system. A variable flow control power steering device has been fitted to further cut fuel use.

Toyota claims the combined fuel consumption for town and highway driving is down from 8.6L to 7.6L/100km and combined carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions have dropped from 228g to 201g/km.

Other enhancements for the latest Fortuner include upping braked towing capacity from 2,800kg to 3,100kg.

Inside, the touchscreen is upgraded to an eight-inch display, the audio system includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the instrument cluster and multi-information display has been revised.

The Fortuner range has two specification levels – the GXL, and the Limited. Both variants gain parking support alert, which includes two front and four rear parking sensors.

New colours are also on the agenda for the 2021 model, with the vehicle coming in emotional red or deep-sea blue.
