Supercar company hails sales surge

Lamborghini is celebrating record half-year sales in 2020, attributing the surge to the launch of six new model variants and pent-up demand following coronavirus lockdowns.

The Italian supercar company delivered 7,430 cars worldwide last year, which was down nine per cent from 2019’s figures.

It blames the drop on a 70-day government-mandated shutdown of its factory in Italy that began in March as the Covid-19 pandemic struck.

Despite that disruption, Lamborghini says the July-December 2020 period saw record sales figures and its best second half-year, although it did not detail the exact numbers.

The carmaker is also confident about 2021 and notes more than half of this year’s planned production has already been assigned.

The United States was the biggest market for the marque last year, accounting for 2,224 vehicles. This was followed by Germany on 607, mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau on 604, and Japan with 600.

South Korea had the biggest growth, with its 303 units representing a 75 per cent increase.

Lamborghini’s top-selling model in 2020 was the Urus SUV, which sold 4,391 units. It was followed by the Huracan on 2,193, and the Aventador with 846.

Stephan Winkelmann, president and chief executive officer, says: “The 2020 results are a clear demonstration of the excellent work that, despite the difficulties of a year of global challenges, was carried out by the entire Lamborghini team with enormous dedication and a spirit of resilience.”

New models launched over the past year include the Huracan Evo RWD coupe, pictured, and convertible models, the limited-edition Sian Roadster, and track-only Essenza SCV12.
