Spreading the word on ELTs

The Tyrewise team is hitting the road this week as it ramps up communication with the automotive industry ahead of the product stewardship scheme for end-of-life tyres (ELTs) being launched on March 1.

A series of roadshows are planned for the North and South Islands, with the first being held at VTNZ Rangiora, 347 Flaxton Road, Rangiora, from 7.30am-8.30am on Tuesday, February 20.

The team will also be talking to tyre sellers and other interested parties at VTNZ’s sites at 14 Teviot Street, South Dunedin, on Wednesday, February 21, and 66 Mersey Street, Invercargill, on Thursday, February 22. Both hour-long events will start at 7.30am.

Details of the locations for the North Island roadshows will be coming soon.

Tyrewise hopes the series of events will further develop relationships with participants registered in the scheme, which has been designed to tackle the 6.5 million tyres that reach their end of life in New Zealand annually.

The Waste Minimisation (Tyres) Regulations 2023 take effect from March 1 and require all those importing or selling regulated tyres, whether loose or attached to a vehicle, to register with Tyrewise.

All tyres will have to be sold in accordance with the scheme and a tyre stewardship fee will be collected on all regulated tyres when they enter the New Zealand market.

The programme will become fully operational from September 1, after which ELTs must be retained and booked for collection through Tyrewise to be taken to processors for recycling.

As Tyrewise’s official launch draws closer, the organisation has also been involved in webinars to help businesses across the automotive sector prepare for the changes.
