Perkins explains classic one-liner

Former racing driver Larry Perkins has spoken about the famous quip he made when a car crashed out of a race during the 1999 V8 Supercars season.

The six-time Bathurst 1000 winner uttered the classic one-liner, “Young bloke, cold tyres, f***ed it up”, to describe the incident and, more broadly, the common mistakes made by younger, less experienced drivers.

The quote has made it onto T-shirts and resurfaced this year as the punchline in Repco’s 2026 “Bringin’ the Bathurst” television advert, which recently featured on Autofile Online.

As part of the build-up to this weekend’s Bathurst 1000, Repco has since released an interview with Perkins in which he chuckles while recounting his most famous racing comment.
