It’s full steam ahead for Move Logistics Group with procurement approved for a methanol-capable vessel.
Earlier this year, the company secured $10 million in co-investment from Waka Kotahi to support initiatives for domestic coastal shipping, reduce freight-sector greenhouse gas emissions and enhance industry “resilience”.
The transport agency has endorsed Move’s proposal for its roll-on, roll-off (ro-ro) design, which includes a methanol tank and pipework installation during construction.
This ensures the ship is ready for the swap-in of carbon-friendly methanol-powered engines as they become available.
“Move is committed to decarbonisation of freight and logistics activities,” says executive director of Chris Dunphy. “Our decision to invest alongside Waka Kotahi demonstrates how a former trucking company can become multi-modal.”
The ro-ro will be able to berth wheeled cargo into at least 13 New Zealand ports without the need for new port infrastructure. It will initially operate three sailings a week between Nelson and New Plymouth, and provide an extra sea bridge between the North and South Islands.
