McLaughlin sets Indy 500 record
Scott McLaughlin will start this year’s Indianapolis 500 from pole position after setting a new track record in qualifying.
The Kiwi driver led the way to make it a clean sweep for Team Penske on the front row of the famous race, which takes place in the early hours of Monday, May 27 (NZ time).
His four-lap average qualifying speed of 234.22mph (376.94kph) broke the mark set by reigning IndyCar champion Alex Palou last year of 234.217mph,
McLaughlin’s best qualifying position from his three previous Indianapolis 500 starts was 14th in 2023.
Will Power will start second in the race and reigning Indy 500 winner Josef Newgarden third.
The other New Zealanders in the IndyCar series, Marcus Armstrong and Scott Dixon, will start from 16th and 21st place on the 33-car grid, respectively.
