THE TRUSTED VOICE OF NZ’s
AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY SINCE 1984

March issue out now

The number of used imports attracting border damage flags has more than doubled in the past year, despite the volume of cars coming into New Zealand dropping. VIA, which is in talks with the NZTA about the issue, says an “if in doubt, flag it” approach is pushing up costs and creating delays downstream.

The MIA is calling for the CCS to be kept, but with the scheme’s emissions trajectory “recalibrated” so it’s credible and workable in New Zealand’s small market. The comments come amid a media frenzy with headlines saying the government is considering canning the scheme. Plus: more industry views and the official line from the government.

The country’s new light fleet is being supersized. Autofile delves into MIA statistics showing more consumers shifting to medium-sized SUVs, what’s happening across different segments, how our cars are being powered and different buyer types.

MITO has celebrated its return to industry ownership with a party at parliament. “We’re looking forward to working with industry to support development goals,” says CEO Verna Niao. Plus: pictures.

Many of New Zealand’s leading automotive businesses have committed to the Women in Automotive Accord, but more need to. Carolyn McMahon, managing director of Honda NZ, issues a call to action if people want the sector to thrive.

A refreshed brand voice doesn’t require a rebrand or big creative agency engagement. It’s about small, consistent updates that keep your message aligned with current buyer behaviour, explains James Hendry, of AdTorque Edge NZ.

VIA’s Kit Wilkerson doesn’t disagree as much as he thought he did when it comes to a proposal by the MTA for a rolling 10-year age limit on used imports. He says: “There’s a coherent way to do so while preserving standards and maintaining the ability to demonstrate compliance.”

• The NZTA has updated the ratings of used vehicles on Rightcar with the overall safety of the light fleet going up by more than 50 per cent.

• Geneva Finance Group has reported an unaudited pre-tax profit of $8.6 million for its nine months to December 31. That’s a year-on-year jump of $2.9m.

• Do extra costs mean more value when it comes to servicing? Read what the MTA’s Larry Fallowfield has to say on the matter.

• Aimee Wiley, of the MIA, says the regulatory environment facing our car industry is shifting rapidly, bringing a level of complexity that cannot be underestimated.

Plus: CarExpert NZ launches, Turners’ plans for a $4.5m branch in Whanganui, the new Hilux and plans for a BEV variant, Kiwis battle for Formula E title, in-depth statistics and much more.
