Eight marques are represented among the nine finalists chosen for the categories covering electric vehicles (EVs) for this year’s AA Driven New Zealand Car of the Year awards.

Mitsubishi has secured two nominations with its Eclipse Cross and Outlander both vying for the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) section, with those vehicles facing competition from Volkswagen’s Multivan T7.

The battery electric vehicle (BEV) section is being contested by the BYD Atto 3, Kia EV6 and Polestar 2, while the Haval 6, Honda Jazz and Toyota Highlander face off in the hybrid class.

Organisers of the annual awards have previously announced the finalists for the three SUV categories and the people’s choice title.

There are 12 categories in all with the focus on cars launched in the past 12 months but other vehicles on sale are considered as long as they have a five-star safety rating.

The winners will be announced on December 2.
