Honda hit by cyber attack

Honda has seen its business in a number of countries disrupted after being hit by a cyber attack.

The Japanese carmaker says there was no breach of data and it expects the overall impact of the June 9 incident to be contained.

In a statement the company says “a cyber attack has taken place on the Honda network” and that it is working to “minimise the impact and to restore full functionality of production, sales and development activities”.

Honda says the ransomware hit its internal servers and forced it to briefly suspend vehicle production globally. Some plants had to cease operations as the marque checked its quality control systems had not been compromised.

The problem was also reportedly affecting the company’s ability to access computer servers, use email and otherwise make use of its internal systems.

The company also tweeted on June 9: “At this time Honda Customer Service and Honda Financial Services are experiencing technical difficulties and are unavailable. We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and understanding.”

Honda New Zealand has been contacted to see if the cyber attack has impacted on its operations.
