Fire strikes car wreckers

An investigation is under way into a fire at a car wreckers’ yard in South Auckland that left dozens of vehicles blackened shells and sent smoke pouring into the sky.

Firefighters were called to the incident on Boundary Road, Papakura, just before 10.30pm on Friday, June 16.

Fire and Emergency NZ says about 60 cars were on fire when crews arrived, with flames engulfing an area measuring about 30 metres by 40 metres.

Crews from 12 fire trucks and four ladder trucks attended the incident. The blaze was “knocked down” by about 2am on June 17 but crews remained at the site until after 10am to monitor hotspots, reports Stuff.

No one was hurt in the fire.
