Tribute to industry’s ‘natural leader’

Motor Trade Association (MTA) president Sturrock Saunders has paid tribute to Rick Murrell, who once held the same role, describing him as a “natural leader” and a “joy to be around”.

Murrell, pictured above, died this week during a fishing trip in Fiordland National Park.

He was dealer principal of Southern Vehicle Sales, which traded as Southland Kia, and was a director of the MTA from 2005 to 2010 before being president between 2010 and 2012.

Saunders, pictured below, says it took time for him to process and reflect on the loss of Murrell, because he “always expected him to be there”.

“I was lucky to experience his interactions with many sectors of society and his deep pride in his family and community,” adds Saunders.

“I was also lucky to have spent time with him on the MTA board, including when he became national president representing thousands of New Zealand motor industry businesses, which he did with absolute commitment and enquiring intelligence.

“I regularly spoke with Rick and he always was energetic, positive and interested in what others were doing.

“He had a natural energy that was a joy to be around. Rick was a natural leader who could inspire, excite and do so with a deep determination and authenticity.

“I have utmost respect for Rick and will miss him dearly, including our regular ‘full gas’ catch-ups, which I know many others will also miss.”

When Murrell left the MTA he said it had been an “honour and a privilege” to lead the association during a time when vehicle licensing and consumer law reforms occupied much of its work, as well as the introduction of MTA’s Gift Card.

The MTA notes he was also known for charity and community work in the Southland region.

Saunders, who plans to attend Murrell’s funeral on behalf of the MTA, says he was a popular and respected figure in the automotive industry.

“I cannot imagine the grief Andrea, Bobby and the Murrell whanau and Southern Vehicle Sales team are going through now, and I send our and your wider motor industry families’ love and heartfelt deepest condolences.”
