F1’s cellphone mishap

A Formula 1 team member would have been left cringing with shame after their misplaced cellphone forced a driver to make an unscheduled return to the pits during a free practice session ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Renault released a video clip from the race in 2010 that features the radio conversation between Robert Kubica and his team after he surprisingly discovered the device in the cockpit of his car while speeding around the track.

“Someone left a phone in my cockpit,” says the Polish driver. “What I should do, throw it away or come in?”

After being told to return to the pit garage immediately, he adds: “I will just stop on the outside of the garage, pass the phone and continue.”

One can only imagine Kubica, who currently races in the FIA World Endurance Championship, and his colleagues were glad the unusual cellphone incident didn’t happen during an actual race.
