Dealership hit by grain silo collapse

About 10 vehicles were damaged at a Christchurch dealership after a wave of grain flooded onto the yard when a silo at a neighbouring flour mill collapsed.

The incident at Value Cars Warehouse on Moorhouse Avenue, Addington, happened at about 7.35pm on Sunday, January 7.

Martin Harcourt, co-owner of the business, told Stuff the pile of grain pushed vehicles into others and one car was shoved about 20 metres. The models affected were older, trade-in vehicles.

A crew from Fire and Emergency New Zealand attended the scene and said no one was hurt and there was no risk to the wider area.

Champion Flour, which operates the flour mill, is working with Christchurch City Council’s regulatory compliance team to determine what caused the storage facility to cave in and spill its load.

WorkSafe has also been notified of the incident.
