Car race goes wrong

A character in American Graffiti, a classic coming-of-age film, delivers a hilarious line after bungling his attempt to race a car away from a set of traffic lights.

Terry “the Toad” Fields first makes a false start after revving his vehicle and challenging another driver. Then when the lights do change from red to green, he accidentally reverses into the car behind him.

The driver of the crunched vehicle approaches Terry, who is played by actor Charles Martin Smith, and says, “Excuse me, but I think we've had an accident.”

A flustered Terry replies, “Well, goddammit, I won't report you this time, but next time just watch it, will ya?” before driving off to leave the man looking dumbfounded.

American Graffiti, which was directed by George Lucas and produced by Francis Ford Coppola, is a study of the cruising and rock ’n’ roll cultures of California in the early 1960s. Released in 1973, it was nominated for five Academy Awards.
