Dealer numbers dwindling

The number of dealers in New Zealand has fallen for the fourth consecutive month and slumped to 2,985 at the end of October, according to figures from the Motor Vehicle Traders Register (MVTR).
It was a drop of nine from 2,994 at the end of September – the first time the total had slipped below the 3,000-mark – and continues a run of falls since June when active registrations for traders stood at 3,020.
Registered dealer numbers for last month were also 61 lower than at the same stage a year ago when the figure was 3,046.
The total has largely been in decline since hitting a high of 3,536 in November 2017.
The MVTR holds essential information about registered traders and their businesses. It is operated by Trading Standards, which falls under the remit of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.
