New car sales keep climbing

There were 10,362 new passenger vehicles registered in September, which was up by 20.9 per cent from 8,570 units in the same month of last year.

It also delivered back-to-back monthly increases for the sector after maintaining the climb from 7,613 sales in July and 8,090 in August

Toyota’s RAV4 was the leading model last month after selling 1,281 units and accounting for 12.4 per cent of the market. Its sales numbers were up by 9.3 per cent from 1,172 registrations in September 2024.

Mitsubishi took out the next two spots on the ladder with the Outlander recording 810 sales and the ASX 805, which compared with 362 and 379 units respectively a year ago.

The year-on-year rise in registrations of more than 100 per cent for both Mitsubishi models gave them each a 7.8 per cent market share last month.

Toyota’s Corolla was the fourth best-seller in September with 434 units and 4.2 per cent of the market. The Ford Everest completed the top five on 363 and 3.5 per cent.

Year-to-date, there have been 70,640 sales, which is up by 14.5 per cent from 61,700 at the same stage a year ago.

The RAV4 is the leading model year-to-date after selling 7,500 units for a 10.6 per cent market share.

The ASX is second with 3,649 units, followed by the Outlander on 3,063, the Kia Seltos with 2,728 and the Everest on 2,075.

Toyota topped the marques’ ladder in September with 2,564 registrations – up 15.1 per cent from 2,228 in the same month a year ago – and 24.7 per cent of the market. 

Mitsubishi was second with 1,755 sales and 16.9 per cent and Kia came third on 945 and 9.1 per cent. Mazda and Ford were next on the ladder with 523 and 415 units respectively.

Toyota is the leading marque year-to-date with 14,965 registrations and a 21.2 per cent slice of the market.

Next is Mitsubishi with 7,846 registrations and 11.1 per cent, and Kia on 6,769 and 9.6 per cent.
