BYD makes world top 10

BYD has broken into the world’s top 10 car companies for sales with the growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) helping it overtake the likes of Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

BYD sold 1.25 million new vehicles in the first half of 2023, which was 96 per cent more than in the same period a year ago.

This tally led to the company being ranked 10th  worldwide, according to figures from research company MarkLines and carmakers’ own data.

The Chinese brand has had a rapid rise up the charts after being placed 16th for the whole of 2022 and not even making the top 20 in 2021, reports Nikkei Asia

BYD was also ranked first in sales of EVs, plug-in hybrid vehicles and fuel cell vehicles across 14 major markets in the first half of this year, MarkLines reports. Tesla was second and the Volkswagen group third.

Toyota was the overall global sales leader in the first half for a fourth straight year after selling 5.41 million vehicles.

All top 20 companies, except Honda, reported increased sales volumes from 2022 when the market was hit by supply chain disruptions and Covid-19 lockdowns.
