Baird bolsters board

Veteran driver Craig Baird has been appointed as a board member for MotorSport New Zealand, bringing international racing experience and road-tested governance expertise to the organisation.

MotorSport NZ describes Baird, pictured, as one of New Zealand motorsport’s most successful and respected competitors. He has enjoyed success in a number of national championships across multiple categories worldwide.

His career includes time as a factory driver for several leading global manufacturers, competing at the highest levels of touring car and GT racing.

Baird, pictured, also has off-track expertise in risk assessment, motorsport safety and high-level driver standards.

He has served as the driving standards adviser for Supercars and GT categories across Asia and is currently head of the Supercars Drivers Safety Group, where he advocates for driver wellbeing and contributes to the improvement of safety systems at elite levels of the sport.

Deborah Day, MotorSport NZ president, has welcomed his appointment and says Baird brings a rare combination of competitive pedigree and governance-relevant experience to the board.

“Craig is someone who understands our sport from every angle – competitor, professional driver, safety advocate and technical adviser,” she adds.

“His insights into safety, risk management and the international motorsport landscape will be invaluable as we continue to develop and modernise motorsport in New Zealand.”

Baird says he feels honoured to join the board and contribute to the organisation’s growth and “supporting the safe, fair and future development of our sport”.

“It is a privilege to work alongside fellow board members, MotorSport New Zealand’s leadership team and the wider motorsport community to help shape a positive future for motorsport in New Zealand,” he continues.

The organisation has also acknowledged the contribution of outgoing board member Ron Mackersey, who did not seek re-appointment at the conclusion of his term.

“Ron’s service and commitment to MotorSport New Zealand over his time on the board is sincerely appreciated,” says Day.

“His knowledge, considered input and dedication to the organisation have made an impact, and we thank him for his valuable contribution to the governance of our sport.”
