World’s fastest furniture
Marketing material for new cars often boasts of the vehicle’s top speed but that’s not such a common highlight when promoting a dining table – unless it’s one called Fast Food.
English inventor Perry Watkins has a reputation for creating unusual vehicles and his speedy dining table holds the record for the world’s fastest piece of furniture after clocking 183.14kph (113.8mph).
The Queen Anne table and six chairs are fitted on a modified 1994 Reliant Scimitar Sabre and set the standard at the UK’s Santa Pod Raceway in September 2010, eclipsing the previous record of 148kph produced by a sofa in 2007.
Fast Food, which has a dummy dressed as a racing driver sitting at the head of the table, comes complete with a nitrous oxide kit and is registered and roadworthy. Teapots form part of the exhaust and the brake lights are disguised as napkins.
