Webinars for ELTs scheme

A series of webinars are being hosted by Tyrewise to help businesses understand their roles and obligations under a recycling scheme for end-of-life tyres (ELTs).

The online workshops come hot on the heels of rules being approved for the product stewardship scheme that will change the way 6.5 million tyres that reach their end of life every year are managed in this country.

The regulations for importing and selling tyres, and how they are managed when they are no longer useable, are the realisation of a project the car industry and others have been involved with since work on it started some 10 years ago.

Adele Rose, pictured, is the chief executive of 3R Group, which is the implementation project manager for Tyrewise.

“Many of you have been working alongside us on a solution for ELTs since 2012 and some long before that,” she says.

“Personally, I would like to congratulate you all on your persistence to see this through and thank those who have lent their expertise and time along the way. As an industry, you can be proud to be at the forefront of product stewardship in New Zealand. Together, we will end tyre waste across the motu.”

Webinar dates

Tyrewise’s webinars are specific to roles businesses have – from importers, including car dealers, through to end-use manufacturers.

Since companies may have more than one role in the stewardship scheme, for example importer and retailer, they may need to register for both. Click here to register.

They are: Importers of loose tyres – November 6 from 9-10am. Importers of tyres attached to vehicles – November 6, 11am-noon. Transporters, processors and manufacturers – November 6, 2-3pm.

Tyre retailers and fitters – November 7, 2-3pm. Generators, such as fleet operators, forestry, mining and so on – November 8, 10-11am. Collection sites – November 13, 10-11am.

Getting signed up

With the regulations in place, Tyrewise is now starting the next phase of the registration process for liable parties and participants.

It will be sending out a link to a form that will allow you to confirm the information it holds about you is correct and to provide details of key contacts in your organisation.

Members of Tyrewise’s field team will then be contacting organisations to arrange a face-to-face visit or phone call to discuss what’s relevant to your role and activities. Visit www.tyrewise.co.nz for a checklist outlining the type of information to be covered. Part of the registration process includes signing up to a code of practice as an importer of a regulated product. This document will be supplied as part of the registration process.

Tyrewise will initially cover all air-filled and solid tyres for use on motorised vehicles for cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, tractors, forklifts, aircraft and off-road vehicles.

Products such as bicycles and non-motorised equipment like prams, as well as coils for retreads, will be brought into the scheme in the future. Consultation with stakeholders on these “scope two” tyres is expected late next year.

Tyre importers have until March 1, 2024, to prepare for the first phase of the regulations to come into effect with the second stage kicking in at the start of September.
