Age limit for used imports
The government in Kenya has notified all second-hand car importers that vehicles first registered overseas in 2017 and earlier will not be allowed into the country after December 31.
Kenya accounted for four per cent of used imports from Japan in 2023. Its total was 61,470 compared to New Zealand’s 114,252, which was 7.4 per cent of the overall total exported from Japan around the world last year.
In addition to Japan, Kenya imports used cars from the United Arab Emirates, UK, Thailand, Singapore and South Africa.
The development comes as the Kenyan government seeks to support local car assembly as more manufacturers establish a base in the country.
The age limit also seeks to prevent the dumping of old second-hand vehicles in the country and to enhance road safety.
The Kenya Bureau of Standards states: “In observance of the eight-year age limit requirement, only right-hand-drive motor vehicles whose year of first registration is from January 1, 2018, and later shall be allowed into the country effective January 1, 2025.”
In addition to car dealers, the rule also applies to returning residents, diplomatic staff and the public.
