Tesla reveals robotaxi

Tesla has unveiled its Cybercab, a robotaxi featuring two gull-wing doors and no steering wheel or pedals, with the model set to go into production from 2026.

The self-driving vehicles, pictured above, will be priced under US$30,000 (NZ$49,250) and the electric-vehicle maker also has plans for a robovan, pictured below, that can carry up to 20 people.

Elon Musk, chief executive officer, showed off the models as his company anticipates a shift from low-priced mass-market cars to robotic vehicles, reports Reuters.

During a glitzy event at the Warner Bros studio near Los Angeles, Musk predicted autonomous cars could be 10 times safer than humans and drive five to 10 times longer.

“The autonomous future is here,” he said. “With autonomy, you get your time back.”

The vehicles will rely on artificial intelligence and cameras rather than hardware common among other robotaxi developers, such as light detection and ranging (lidar).
