Tesla beats ‘stuffy’ rivals to UK gong

The Tesla Model 3 has taken out the title of the 2020 UK Car of the Year after being judged as the overall winner in the executive-vehicle category.

Jaguar’s I-Pace took the top gong in 2019 meaning an electric vehicle (EV) has won two years in a row.

The Tesla battled it out against eight other new cars for the overall title. Three were EVs and the popularity of another one of the trio – Kia’s e-Niro – ensured the closest winning margin in the awards’ history.

The judges describe the Model 3 as a “game-changer” even though the phrase is often overused. They say its technology, performance and range make it a popular choice for many consumers.

A total of 29 panellists judged each entrant. Tom Ford, of Top Gear, says: “Clean, crisp and technological inside, the Model 3 drives and performs like we think EVs should. It makes others in the sector feel stuffy and awkward.”
