Marque launches new SUV

BYD Auto New Zealand went underground to celebrate the local launch of the marque’s Sealion 7, an SUV that boasts a range of up to 482km.

The company ventured 200 metres below the surface of Lake Manapouri in Fiordland National Park, South Island, to unveil the EV in the depths of Meridian’s hydro-power station on February 19.

Warren Willmot, BYD’s country manager, says the car’s reveal, which was streamed online, was also designed to make a statement about innovation, ingenuity and the future of mobility.

He explains New Zealand’s largest hydro station symbolises clean renewable energy and was the “perfect backdrop” for showcasing the Sealion 7.

“Just like this hydro station, the vehicle we’re launching is a leap forward. It’s a fusion of cutting-edge technology and sustainable design,” adds Willmot, pictured.

“The Sealion 7 has been charged by the cleanest electricity in the world. It’s a powerful reminder the future of transportation isn’t just about vehicles we drive, it’s about the energy that powers them.”

The vehicle features an 82kWh blade battery and is being offered in two variants, premium and performance.

The premium model has a rear-wheel-drive motor producing 230kW of power and 380Nm of torque. These combine to deliver a 0-100kph acceleration time of 6.7 seconds.

As for the performance model, it comes with all-wheel drive, an electric motor that boasts 390kW of power and 690Nm of torque, and can cover the 0-100kph sprint in 4.5 seconds.

Pricing starts from $67,990 plus on-road costs.
