The Ford Puma has retained its position as the UK’s best-selling new passenger vehicle in 2024 with 48,340 registrations.

It narrowly beat Kia’s Sportage with 47,163 while the British-built Nissan Qashqai came third on 42,418. Next up were the Nissan Juke with 34,454 and Tesla Model Y on 32,862.

All five of the top five best-sellers were SUVs for the first time. Only two non-SUVs were in last year’s UK top 10, while the Model Y was the only fully electric model.

The second most-popular BEV was Audi’s Q4 e-tron on 17,465 with Tesla’s Model 3 coming third with 17,425.

Completing the fully electric top 10 were the MG4 – 15,651, BMW i4 – 12,953, Mercedes-Benz EQA – 11,617, Skoda Enyaq – 11,617, Hyundai Kona – 10,858, Volvo EX30 – 9,931 and VW ID.4 – 8,927.

Volkswagen remained the country’s top car brand with 166,304 registrations last year.

BMW on 125,265 overtook Audi with 122,43 while Kia had its best year ever with 112,252. Fifth spot was taken by Ford on 109,955, down by two places.

In terms of percentage growth in the UK, BYD posted a 659 per cent jump on its 2023 performance with sales of 8,788.

New Chinese market entrant Omoda had a strong start with a policy of getting as many vehicles out there as possible resulting in strong numbers. It registered 3,629 units in its first year.
