Subaru recalls Imprezas over Takata risk

Subaru is recalling a number of Imprezas because problems with Takata airbag inflators may increase the risk of passengers being injured in a crash.

The marque warns models manufactured between 2004 and 2007 may have a Takata front passenger airbag SPI inflator with propellant wafers that have “increased potential for moisture intrusion over time”.

“This could make the inflator assembly prone to rupture during airbag deployment, increasing the risk of occupant injury,” the company says in its March 30 recall notice.

Owners of such cars are advised to register the vehicle’s details at www.subaru.co.nz/owners/owners-registration. They will then receive a letter advising when replacement parts are available and can contact an authorised Subaru dealer to conduct repairs.

Toyota Avensis, Corolla, Picnic, Yaris. Model years 2001-10

Recall issued: March 9. The hazard: Front passenger airbag inflators may have been assembled with improperly manufactured propellant wafers, which may cause the inflator to rupture and the air bag to deploy abnormally in a crash, increasing the risk of injury to the occupant. What to do: Contact a Toyota dealer or Toyota’s customer dialogue centre.

Lexus SC430, model years 2001-08

Recall issued: March 9. The hazard: Front passenger airbag inflators may have been assembled with improperly manufactured propellant wafers, which may cause the inflator to rupture and the airbag to deploy abnormally in a crash, increasing the risk of injury to the occupant. What to do: Contact a Lexus dealer or Lexus NZ.

BMW 320, 323i SE sedan, 330, 318i A SE sedan, model years 1997-2000

Recall issued: March 16. The hazard: BMW AG has made a global recall for the 3 series E46 according to the vehicle identification number selection to check the driver’s airbag. What to do: Take vehicle to a BMW workshop.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class, C-Class, model year 2019

Recall issued: March 16. The hazard: The driver’s airbag may detach itself from its base plate and enter into the vehicle interior at high speed in an accident. What to do: Contact a Mercedes-Benz service outlet.

Lexus GS350, GS430, GS450H, IS300, IS350, model years 2013-19

Recall issued: March 16. The hazard: A low-pressure fuel pump, located in the fuel tank, may include impellers that have been manufactured incorrectly. Deformation of the impeller may cause the fuel pump to become inoperative, which may result in check engine and master warning indicators lighting up, rough engine running, engine no start and/or vehicle stall while driving at low speed. In rare instances, vehicle stall may occur at higher speeds, increasing the risk of a crash. What to do: Contact a Lexus dealer or Lexus NZ.
