Strongman flips car with ease
Tributes have been paid this week to legendary strongman Geoff Capes, who alongside a raft of sporting achievements once appeared in an advertisement for Volkswagen.
The shot putter, who died aged 75 on October 23, represented Great Britain at three Olympics and three Commonwealth Games. During the 1980s, he twice won the World’s Strongest Man competition.
His feats helped make him a household name in the UK and he starred in a TV commercial for the Volkswagen Polo in 1983.
The amusing advert shows him nonchalantly lifting and rolling the car while dressed in a suit so he can give the vehicle “a good look over”.
Two of Capes’ career highlights came in New Zealand as he won shot put gold when Christchurch hosted the 1974 Commonwealth Games and he secured his first World’s Strongest Man title in the same city in 1983.
