Huge increases in registrations for light commercial models and marques before higher penalties came into force.

Registrations of new and used commercials soared last month, when compared with June 2022, before higher fees for such models kicked in under the clean car discount at the start of July.

There were 6,258 new commercials registered, which was up by 152.4 per cent from 2,479. Toyota’s Hilux was the top model with 1,703 units, with the Mitsubishi Triton and Ford Ranger next on 1,011 and 975 respectively.

Numbers for the Hilux jumped 122.3 per cent from 766 a year ago and secured 37.2 per cent of the market in June.

Triton’s figures leaped 921.2 per cent from just 99 over the same timeframe, while the Ranger climbed 333.3 per cent from 225.

Toyota’s Hiace and the Isuzu D-Max, pictured, completed the top five with 296 and 255 units registered respectively.

The Ranger remains out front over the past six months, with 5,870 registrations year-to-date and a 24.5 per cent market share.

Next is the Hilux on 5,580 and 23.3 per cent, followed by the Triton on 2,471 and 10.3 per cent.

Top of the marques’ ladder last month was Toyota with 2,155 registrations, an increase of 134.2 per cent from 920 in the previous June.

Its 34.4 per cent market share put it ahead of Ford on 1,128 units and 18 per cent of activity, and Mitsubishi with 1,011 and 16.2 per cent.

Year-to-date, Toyota has had 7,029 light commercials registered for a market share of 29.3 per cent, with Ford next on 6,433 and 26.8 per cent.

Used sector jumps

Some 1,018 used-imported commercials were registered in June compared with 348 a year ago for an increase of 192.5 per cent.

Toyota was the best-selling marque with 541 registrations, up from 94 a year ago, and a market share of 53.1 per cent. Nissan was next on 235 and 23.1 per cent.

The Toyota Hiace was the top model with 39.9 per cent of last month’s market thanks to 406 registrations, which was up from just 50 in June 2022.

Nissan’s NV350 was next with 158 registrations and a 15.5 per cent share of activity, while the Toyota Regius was third on 86 units and 8.4 per cent.
