Rule change for used imports

The requirement to etch the vehicle identification number (VIN) into the rear window of used imports and vehicles being re-registered has been dropped by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.

The government department advises industry of the rule change in its latest edition of Inspection news.

“We’ve removed the requirement to etch a VIN into the rear window of a used imported motor vehicle, and a previously registered vehicle re-entering service,” the agency explains.

“This process no longer has a clear purpose or result. Removing it will save inspectors time and reduce risks to their health and safety and reduce IO [inspection organisation] equipment and compliance costs.”

The Imported Motor Vehicle Industry Association (VIA) sent out an email alert on August 23 highlighting the change.
