Rolling lab into the future

Hyundai’s N division’s RN24 is a next generation “rolling lab” demonstrating the future possibilities of high-performance electric vehicles (EVs).

The RN24 is the latest evolution in a series of test cars that bridge the gap between motorsport technology and N production models.

Originating with the RM series in 2012, and including EVs such as RN22e and N Vision 74, rolling labs serve as testbeds.

The RN24 continues this legacy by pushing the limits of motorsports technology and shaping the future of the N brand’s electrified vehicles.

The Ioniq 5 N’s motorsport-capable 478kW dual-motor power electronics (PE) system has been applied to the RN24.

This was installed into a compact EV chassis inspired by the World Rally Championship (WRC), and results in a compact, lightweight and agile EV.

A redesigned battery pack retains the production model’s 84kWh capacity but allows for a 340mm shorter wheelbase, bringing this down to B-segment size.

The RN24’s chassis system boasts a newly designed WRC-style suspension set-up with rally-spec dampers and high-rigidity subframes.

Its WRC powertrain drive-control logic system empowers drivers to adjust PE power and balance, and acceleration and regenerative brake sensitivity, via steering-wheel buttons. This functionality mirrors features found in Hyundai WRC challengers.

The RN24’s battery and motor cooling performance are ensured by modifications to Ioniq 5 N’s system, and extra agility is achieved by a faster steering set-up for rally car-level response.

Among its cutting-edge sport technologies, “rally mode” motor torque control is a key differentiator. Like Hyundai N’s four-wheel-drive system on the i20 N Rally 1, this helps optimise torque distribution to all four wheels.

The e-handbrake is also inspired by Hyundai N’s 10-year history in the WRC. It helps reduce weight by eliminating the need for physical brake.

The RN24 is defined visually by its highly rigid, exoskeleton-style exposed roll cage. Inspired by WRC concepts, this not only ensures occupant safety but adds to the vehicle’s overall performance and stability during high-speed manoeuvres.

The application of N Performance Parts includes Elantra N 19-inch matte-black forged wheels.

In addition, the RN24 is fitted with a spoiler from Hyundai Motorsport’s Touring Car Racing models. This enhances aerodynamic performance, improving agility and stability. It also implements 3D-printed gussets for better rigidity and weight reduction.

“The RN24 exemplifies Hyundai N’s commitment to advancing electric motorsport technology by prioritising the driving experience rather than spec numbers,” says Joon Park, vice-president of N Brand’s management group.

“This rolling lab proves that there remains untapped potential for high-performance EVs and, with new technologies ahead, there’s much to look forward to.”
