Registrations surge for used imports
There were 16,680 used-imported cars registered last month – up 125.4 per cent from 7,399 in June last year – as numbers surged before changes to the clean car discount.
Nissan’s Serena, pictured, was a notable climber and was the fourth most popular model with the MPV’s 710 units representing a year-on-year rise of 655.3 per cent.
Activity for used imports surged last month ahead of the feebates scheme being reset on July 1 with fewer vehicles now eligible for discounts, including many conventional hybrids, and increased penalties for high emitters.
It took the year-to-date total for the sector at the end of June to 58,772 – 10.8 per cent lower than the same time in 2022 when 65,920 were registered.
Toyota’s Prius was the top model last month with 1,745 registrations, up by 44.6 per cent from 1,207 in June 2022, and a market share of 10.5 per cent.
Next was the Toyota Aqua with 1,294 after a climb of 132.7 per cent from 556 units a year ago, while the Mazda Axela remained third with its 824 cars registered jumping 107 per cent from 398.
Year to date, the Aqua has 8,109 registrations and 13.8 per cent of the market, followed by the Prius on 5,481 and 9.3 per cent, and the Axela on 3,100 and 5.3 per cent.
Toyota was the top marque in June on 5,849 registrations, which was up 105.7 per cent from 2,844 in the same month of last year. This gave it a 35.1 per cent slice of the total market.
Nissan was second with 2,527 units, a jump of 151.2 per cent from 1,006 a year ago, and a 15.1 per cent share.
Mazda, Subaru and Honda completed the top five with 2,235, 1,457 and 1,131 vehicles registered, respectively.
Toyota has accounted for 38.8 per cent of all used-imported cars sold over the first six months of the year with 22,792 vehicles registered.
