Record EV uptake in Oz

Australians are embracing electric cars at record levels with EVs accounting for 16.4 per cent of all new-vehicle sales in April.

A total of 92,591 new vehicles were sold across the ditch last month for an increase of 2.2 per cent compared with the same month in 2025, demonstrating the resilience of the market despite ongoing global uncertainty and the prospect of further interest-rate rises.

“The increase in supply of EVs since the introduction of the new-vehicle efficiency scheme, combined with higher petrol prices and continued support provided through the federal government’s electric car discount [ECD], is translating into stronger demand,” says Tony Weber, pictured, chief executive of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.

He adds an announcement made on May 5 that the ECD will continue would help sustain momentum in the market. “There are about 110 EV models available to Australians and the supply of EVs continues to increase. The ECD has provided important stimulus to the market and its continuation will support the growth of EVs.

“Stronger EV uptake is driving increased demand for public charging, and that demand must be matched by a step-change in public and private investment to ensure infrastructure keeps pace.”

BYD was the second-highest-selling brand last month, capturing 8.3 per cent of the total Australian market and underscoring the growing presence of Chinese-manufactured vehicles, which accounted for around 30 per cent all sales during April.

The top-selling models were the Toyota RAV4 on 3,729, Ford Ranger with 3,661, Toyota Hilux with 2,835, Chery Tiggo 4 Pro on 2,379 and Hyundai Kona with 2,158.

Toyota remained the market leader last month with 15,185 sales. It was followed by BYD on 7,702, Kia with 6,450, Hyundai on 6,002 and Ford with 5,748.
