Ranger rules commercial sector
The Ford Ranger, pictured, has repeated its success of 2024 and retained its spot as the top-selling commercial vehicle.
The blue oval’s ute completed 9,681 sales in 2025, which also made it the second most popular vehicle overall behind Toyota’s RAV4.
While the number of Ranger registrations was down from 11,741 in 2024, it still secured a 24.3 per cent share of last year’s new commercials market.
The Toyota Hilux finished second on the commercials ladder, and third overall, with 8,152 sales and 20.4 per cent. Mitsubishi’s Triton was next up with 3,279 and 8.2 per cent.
Total registrations for new commercials reached 39,866 in 2025. That was down 3.7 per cent from 41,384 in 2024, according to NZTA statistics.
The Nissan Navara was fourth on 2,500 and 6.3 per cent. Toyota’s Hiace came fifth among the new commercial models and was the most popular van thanks to 2,064 registrations for a 5.2 per cent market share.
Sixth spot in 2025 went to the BYD Shark 6 with 1,882 units, followed by Ford’s Transit on 1,256. The top 10 was rounded out by the Isuzu D-Max on 927, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter with 815 and Fiat’s Ducato on 561.
Toyota closes gap on Ford
Ford was New Zealand’s best-selling commercials marque of 2025 with 10,983 units for a market share of 27.5 per cent. This compared to 13,211 in 2024 for 31.9 per cent.
Toyota again placed second with 10,617 and 26.6 per cent. In 2024, its figures were 9,495 and 22.9 per cent.
Mitsubishi’s statistics for last year came in at 3,280 and 8.2 per cent to claim third. It had 4,232 sales in 2024 for a market share of 10.2 per cent.
Nissan came fourth in 2025 with 2,500 registrations and 6.3 per cent of the market. The top five was completed by BYD with 1,882 and 4.7 per cent.
Monthly sales dip
For December alone, registrations of new commercial vehicles fell by 6.9 per cent to 2,884 compared to 3,098 in the same month of 2024.
The Ranger led the way with 790 units for a market share of 27.4 per cent. Hilux finished the month second with 307 and Mitsubishi’s Triton came third on 287.
Ford was December’s best-selling marque with 877 units and a 30.4 per cent market share. Toyota was second with 464 and Mitsubishi’s 287 units secured third.
