Ram cans all-electric ute

Stellantis has cancelled its electric Ram 1500, which was being developed, citing stalling demand in the US for battery-powered models.
The decision follows multiple delays for the ute, pictured, which the brand originally showed in 2023 for release last year. It most recently told suppliers production would start in mid-2026.
Ram still plans to sell a hybrid ute that uses an onboard petrol generator to extend the range of its electric motor and battery. Initially called the Ramcharger, it’s slated for launch next year and will adopt the cancelled EV’s name to become the 1500 REV.
“As demand for full-size battery electric trucks slows in North America, Stellantis is reassessing its product strategy and will discontinue development of a full-size BEV pick-up,” the carmaker says.
Ram had planned to sell the electric model with a choice of two different-sized batteries, but it canned the long-range version this January. That followed news in December that Ram would delay the model until next year, choosing to release the Ramcharger first.
The move is the latest by Stellantis in an ongoing shift of its product strategy since Carlos Tavares quit as chief executive in December. It’s also among a number of EV projects to be delayed or cancelled since Donald Trump won the US presidential election in November 2024.
