Puma promises plenty of innovation

Ford is bolstering its range of SUVs on offer to Kiwi motorists with the new-look Ford Puma soon to hit our shores.
Besides refinements to the exterior, there are a number of high-tech additions inside the vehicle, such as a Ford Pass Connect embedded modem, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility with wireless smartphone charging.
The model will join the Everest and Endura in the marque’s SUV range, with the latest addition being sourced from Europe.
“The Puma and [forthcoming] Escape both show the desire for charismatic, innovative models with a high level of standard equipment, from safety and driver assist technology, for discerning customers who demand both style and substance,” says Simon Rutherford, managing Director of Ford New Zealand.
“As an advanced, connected urban SUV, the Puma will bring smart, ‘life hack’ innovations to customers, like the Ford Pass Connect embedded modem.”
The 2020 Puma line-up is powered by a 1.0-litre turbocharged EcoBoost three-cylinder engine that teams with a seven-speed automatic transmission and comes in front-wheel drive.
With 92kW and 170Nm, the engine includes high pressure direct fuel injection, twin-independent variable cam timing and fuel saving cylinder deactivation.
Other features of the Puma include 17-inch, 10-spoke alloy wheels, chrome grille elements and five selectable drive modes covering normal, sport, eco, slippery and trail.
The model has a 2,588mm wheelbase and the 60/40 split-fold rear seat can be lowered for cargo space of up to 1170 litres, with a 410-litre boot space with the second-row seat in place.
Among the array of driver assistance technology on the new models is autonomous emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane keep aid, cruise control and rear parking sensors.
Inside, the Puma features a leather-wrap steering wheel and an 8.0-inch full colour centre display, while FordPass Connect brings several services straight to the owner’s smartphone.
A sportier take on the model, the Puma ST-Line, will also be available and offers a lower stance that is achieved by 17-inch, five-spoke, alloy wheels. It also boasts a larger ST-Line integrated rear spoiler.
In addition to the Puma package, the ST-Line features a 12.3-inch full colour digital instrument cluster, a flat-bottom leather steering wheel and sports suspension.
Pricing for the Puma starts at $33,990, while the ST-Line starts at $37,990.
