British rock band Oasis have been in the headlines this week after announcing their plans to reunite for a tour 15 years after last performing live.

But Noel Gallagher, lead guitarist and vocalist with the hitmakers, previously made the news after revealing he splashed out £110,000 (about NZ$231,000 today) on a converted 1967 Jaguar Mark 2 in the late 1990s but he never drove it.

He owned the vehicle, pictured, for more than two decades, during which it spent most of its time in a garage.

Gallagher, pictured inset, says he purchased the car in 1997 but with the conversion taking up to two years he had completely forgotten about it until it turned up at his home.

“I was in the kitchen one day and this low-loader pulled up outside the house with this car on the back,” he told Radio X.

“I was putting the kettle on, thinking, ‘f***ing lovely car, that on the back of that truck. I’m gonna get one of those, one day’. And the guy knocked on the door and said, ‘Mr Gallagher? Your car’. I’d forgotten that I’d bought the car.”

Gallagher, who has never learned to drive, recounted his “most expensive mistake” in an interview with Radio X in 2019. The tale starts 4 minutes 51 seconds into the video below.

He reportedly only went in the Jaguar for one short drive, with his now ex-wife Sara MacDonald at the wheel, before selling the car for about £125,000 in 2022.
