New world record for EV sales

Global sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) hit record levels for the second month in a row in October, according to the latest data from market research company Rho Motion.

Some 1.72 million such units were sold last month, which was up by 50,000 from the previous record set in September this year.

It was also a jump of 35 per cent from the same month last year, with the increase driven by a 54 per cent sales surge in China.

The Chinese electric vehicle (EV) market also set a new monthly milestone in October with 1.2m units sold, a rise of six per cent from the previous month and up by more than 50 per cent compared with October 2023.

Year-to-date the demand for EVs in China has grown by 38 per cent and the global market is up by 24 per cent.

Rho Motion’s latest figures show European sales nudged up 0.8 per cent year-on-year to 260,000 in October but were down 14 per cent from September, reports Reuters.

Sales of BEVs and PHEVs in the United States and Canada increased by 11.4 per cent from a year ago to 160,000, while the tally for the rest of the world rose 10.9 per cent.
