New ute hits showrooms
MG Motor has officially launched its MGU9 ute in New Zealand, with key features of the vehicle including a multi-link rear suspension system, 3.5-tonne towing capacity and the ability to provide cabin-to-tub access.
Peter Ciao, MG Motor Australia and New Zealand chief executive officer, says the launch marks the start of a new era for the marque and the ute promises “comfort and rugged capability for local drivers”.
“Many Aussies and Kiwis have been a part of MG Motor’s journey from zero to a top 10 brand,” he adds.
“The MG success story so far has been based on smaller cars and SUVs that Kiwis have fallen in love with, but the MGU9 is our ‘big’ model step up.”
The MGU9 is available in three variants, the Explore, Explore X and Explore Pro.
Dean Sheed, country business manager for New Zealand, adds: “The ute is more than just a vehicle – it’s a cultural icon. For generations, it has stood for independence, practicality and a certain rite of passage.
“With the MGU9, we’re giving a new generation and current drivers the opportunity to build on the iconic culture of the ute.
“We wanted a dual-cab ute product that is designed and engineered for all genres of customers, built to exceed their cultural, lifestyle and utility needs.
“Whether you’re navigating corrugations, climbing rocky inclines, or cruising the freeway, you can rest assured the MGU9 is purpose-built to tackle the task.”
The MGU9 is powered by a 2.5-litre turbo diesel engine paired with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and an advanced BorgWarner 4WD system, with electronically controlled locking differentials on both axles.
The chassis has been subject to an anti-corrosion treatment process and a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension are in place to enhance handling and ride comfort.
Meanwhile, the rear seats can be folded flat as part of MG’s MultiFold seats and Smart Hatch folding mid-gate proprietary design, which enables a cabin-to-tub pass-through and creates a loading area for longer equipment and materials.
The MGU9 has also been awarded a five-star safety rating from ANCAP and it integrates vehicle dynamic control, traction control and automatic emergency braking to improve control, stability and safety.
In the cabin, the driver’s seat has a built-in ventilation and massage function to reduce fatigue and there is a 12.3-inch digital cluster and 12.3-inch central control screen.
Pricing starts from $60,990 plus on-road costs.
