The ninth-generation Toyota Camry has landed in New Zealand with the 2024 model receiving a styling overhaul, a redesigned interior and the marque’s most efficient, hybrid system.

Three grades are available in New Zealand, the GX, SX and ZR, and all feature front-wheel drive and have a 2.5-litre petrol engine matched to a hybrid system. The most powerful Camry now boasts a total output of 170kW, up 10kW from the previous generation.

Fuel consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the latest Camry are down from its predecessors. GX and SX grades now have a combined fuel consumption of 4.4L/100km and combined emissions of 101g/km.

ZR has also reduced to a combined fuel consumption of 4.5L/100km and combined emissions of 103g/km.

Outward appearances between the three grades are minimal, although the alloy wheel design shifts from 17-inch silver metallic alloys on the GX and SX grades to 18-inch black painted and machined finish alloys for the ZR grade.

The SX adds LED front fog lights, multi-lens LED headlights and full LED rear tailgate lights, while the ZR features a panoramic roof, rain-sensing wipers and privacy rear and side glass.

On the inside, black and dark grey fabric seat material is standard in the GX and SX, while the ZR features black leather accented upholstery.

The SX driver can adjust their seat eight ways using a powered switch and has a two-way power adjustable lumbar support. The ZR has the same powered driver seat, a power adjustable front passenger seat and front seat heating and ventilation.

An infotainment display on the dashboard measures eight inches in the GX, rising to 12.3-inches in the SX, while the ZR has a 12.3-inch colour meter, 12.3-inch audio display and head-up display.

The latest iteration of Toyota Safety Sense is included in the Camry and includes pre-collision system with vehicle, pedestrian, bicycle and motorcycle detection.

Other features include emergency steering assist, intersection collision avoidance support, lane tracing assist, dynamic radar cruise control, and emergency driver stop system.

The 2024 Camry is available in seven base shades, glacier white, silver pearl, precious metal, eclipse, scarlet flare, and two new shades, polished bronze and deep sea blue. The SX and ZR are also available in frosted white.

Andrew Davis, vice-president mobility at Toyota New Zealand, says the Camry has dominated the domestic sedan market for a number of years.

“Camry really is the best of both worlds. It has the sleek, sporty look of a sedan, and offers exceptional handling and driving dynamics,” he explains.

“Inside, it has the roominess of an SUV and with the lower centre of gravity matched to a hybrid system, it really is a pure thrill to drive.”

Pricing starts from $49,990.
