New leader for MotorSport NZ
MotorSport New Zealand has announced the appointment of Mike Hartley as its new chief executive officer after an extensive recruitment process.
The organisation says Hartley, pictured, has a combination of “deep commercial expertise, governance experience, and a lifelong passion for sport and motorsport in particular”.
With more than 25 years’ experience across senior executive leadership, consultancy and governance roles, he has held leadership positions in a range of industries, including marketing, data and strategy.
These have included general manager and managing director roles across Asia-Pacific, and as founder and chief executive officer of an international firm.
Alongside his commercial career, he has extensive sporting governance experience, having served in leadership and board roles across high-performing rugby, netball, golf and charitable organisations.
Deborah Day, president of MotorSport NZ, says Hartley stood out as a candidate who brings strategic capability and a strong alignment with the values of the organisation.
“Mike brings exactly the blend of commercial acumen, people-focused leadership and sporting understanding that MotorSport New Zealand needs as we continue to modernise and grow,” she notes.
“He understands what it takes to run a complex, member-driven organisation, and he has a genuine passion for motorsport at both grassroots and elite levels.
“The board is extremely confident that Mike is the right leader to guide the organisation into its next phase.”
Hartley says he is thrilled to be joining MotorSport NZ team and “excited to be a champion for all in our motorsport community”.
“I’m looking forward to building on our excellent foundations to create a growing, vibrant and connected future for our sport,” he adds.
He will officially take up the role on January 5, 2026, and replaces Wayne Scott, who has served as interim chief executive officer for the past 18 months.
Day says: “On behalf of the board and the wider motorsport community, I want to sincerely thank Wayne Scott for his outstanding leadership during a critical period for the organisation.
“Wayne has provided stability, clarity and strong direction, and his contribution over the past 18 months has been invaluable.”
