Toyota New Zealand has broadened its horizons with a new entry-level two-wheel-drive Hilux, the WorkMate. The new variant is aimed at buyers who need an affordable, reliable workhorse.

The new WorkMate replaces the S grade and comes with single cab chassis and double cab variants. It’s available as a two-wheel drive and has a low body height allowing easier on and offloading of equipment and tools.

Toyota New Zealand COO, Neeraj Lala, says the WorkMate would meet customer demand for an affordable, safe and reliable ute.

“The WorkMate is a true workhorse. It has all the features you need and nothing you don’t,” Lala says. “The name WorkMate really says it all. It’s more about price, value, and the capability to help you get the job done.”

The WorkMate is powered by a 2.7-litre petrol engine. Maximum power of 122kW and maximum torque of 245Nm is transferred to the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission.

The 2.7-litre petrol engine in Toyota’s new ute means no road user charges, cheaper registration and servicing for customers.

The WorkMate comes with a safety package, which includes a pre-collision system with autonomous emergency braking for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert and road sign assist.

The Hilux WorkMate comes with a 2019 5-star ANCAP safety rating, and Hilux with TSS are the only utes in the market currently to have a 2019 rating.

The Hilux WorkMate also has a reversing camera as standard, seven airbags and a 6.1-inch touchscreen audio system.

The Toyota drive-away pricing includes all on road costs; WOF, registration, a full tank of fuel, floor mats, and the three years or 100,000 kms warranty.

The 2019 Toyota Hilux WorkMate variants are priced at:

- Single Cab Cab Chassis priced at $28,990
- Double Cab priced at $29,990.
