New approach for Aston Martin

Aston Martin has embraced 3D printing technology in the creation of a V12-engined two-seater, coach-built design concept called DBR22.

It is the latest project from Q by Aston Martin, which this year celebrates a decade of building one-off commissions such as the Aston Martin Victor, and low-volume specials including the Vulcan and the Vantage V600.

The DBR22 showcases a new body from Aston Martin’s designers and its coach-built form is created from a minimal number of body panels for a more sculpted presence.

Other features include a new front grille and a horseshoe vent on the bonnet, with the latter to help airflow from the 5.2-litre V12 twin-turbo engine.

There are also new 21-inch alloy wheels with a 14-spoke design created especially for the DBR22 and the cockpit makes extensive use of leather and exposed carbon fibre.

At the rear, the design concept has a slim, full-width light bar and a perforated panel to allow hot air to exit the tail.

The powertrain has peak outputs of 715PS and 753Nm – delivering a 0-96kph sprint time of 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 319kph – and is paired with an eight-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission.

The DBR22 was unveiled during California’s 2022 Monterey Car Week in August and also features a 3D printed rear subframe, which is the first time Aston Martin has used this method. The component is made from multiple 3D printed aluminium parts that are bonded to form the finished subframe.

This approach provides weight saving and no reduction in stiffness, plus the ability to make special parts for ultra-low volume models.

Roberto Fedeli, Aston Martin’s chief technical officer, says: “Technology is pivotal in the construction of DBR22, with extensive use of carbon fibre throughout and the use of 3D printing for the manufacture of a structural component.

“As such DBR22 showcases Aston Martin’s unique capabilities, with world-class design combined with an agile, intelligent approach to engineering and production.

“For a car that was designed to celebrate the ultimate bespoke customisation service, the engineering developments mean DBR22 truly has the dynamic theatre to match, ensuring the drive is just as addictive as its looks.”
